Have you ever wanted to make your own homemade potato chips but thought you were limited to baking them in the oven or frying them? You can also make microwave potato chips in less than 5 minutes and they are much healthier than store bought chips.
I love making these for my kids because I know they are healthy. My toddler and baby love how crunchy the chips are and like to choose their own seasoning.
Homemade Potato Chips Made In The Microwave
My mother-in-law actually introduced these homemade potato chips to me a few years ago. She gave us this funny red plastic plate with holes in it and showed us how we could make potato chips in the microwave. At the time, I thought it was a funny “As Seen On TV” kind of product and it stayed in my cabinet for a long time.
After I found out I have gallstones and started to consciously eat healthier to try to gain some control over my health, I pulled those funny plates back out. I also discovered that you can make potato chips in the microwave on a regular plate. When using a regular plate, just be sure to coat the bottom of the plate with oil so they don’t stick. I used a spray can of olive oil. Also, regular plates get VERY hot in the microwave, so just be careful when you take the plate out.
To make homemade potato chips in the microwave all you need to do is slice a potato into thin slices, spray a plate with oil, lay the potato slices on a plate in a single layer, season them and then microwave them for about 4 minutes. Really, that’s all there is to it!
I definitely [easyazon_link identifier=”B012BVH9HW” locale=”US” tag=”practmommy-20″]recommend using a mandolin[/easyazon_link] to slice the potato. The key to these potato chips working is that they are sliced very, very thin. I tried using a regular knife, but I could not get them thin enough to make good microwave potato chips.
Something else to consider – go light on your seasoning, especially the salt. A little seasoning goes a very long way with these chips and you don’t want it to be overpowering. [easyazon_link identifier=”B0087ASM6E” locale=”US” tag=”practmommy-20″]I really like this seasoning salt[/easyazon_link] or try something different, like [easyazon_link identifier=”B000R96EOU” locale=”US” tag=”practmommy-20″]Ranch dressing mix[/easyazon_link] or [easyazon_link identifier=”B004VNTTKY” locale=”US” tag=”practmommy-20″]BBQ meat seasoning[/easyazon_link]. It’s up to you!
It should only take about 4 minutes in the microwave for each plate, but you may want to start with 3 minutes and see how yours are turning out. I also found that microwaving them on a regular plate took slightly longer and it helped to take them out halfway through, peel them off the plate and lay them back down. That gives the bottom the chance to circulate some air and get nice and crispy.
The only drawback to making your homemade potato chips in the microwave is that you are limited to very small batches. However, the upside is that you can change up the seasonings with each plate of chips you make. This makes it easy to give your kids a totally different flavor than what you like to eat.
To store the chips for later, place them in a ziplock bag in your pantry. They stay good for a week at least, but to be honest they don’t usually last more than a day or two before we eat them all.

Making a small batch of potato chips might not be a bad thing. Usually when I want to indulge I only want a few bites of something, so this would be a great alternative to a whole bag of chips!
I’ve tried making chips in the microwave and just placed them on a napkin, but I’m wondering if the plate helps cook them faster? Would love if you shared this on the Merry Monday Link Party.
I think the plate does help. They probably glued to the napkin right?
