7 Tips And Tricks For Kids On Facebook

Since cyberbullying (that is, teasing other people online) has become a hotly debated topic, Facebook has placed special emphasis on appropriate settings options. They are intended to protect your privacy where necessary. By privacy, we mean that not everyone should and must know everything about you.

Facebook’s diverse privacy settings are a good thing. But even for adults, they are very confusing and complicated. That’s why we’re taking a closer look at this topic today. The following tips and tricks will help you set up your Facebook profile the way you want it.

Trick No. 1: Block People

Whether it’s because someone is harassing you or because of a dispute – if you want, you can always block people on Facebook. This means that he or she can no longer start conversations with you or read posts on your profile. In addition, these people will no longer be able to tag you in posts or invite you to events or groups. They will be removed from your list as a friend and will no longer be able to add you.

This also means that you will no longer be able to start a conversation with them. All the restrictions that your friends have as a result of being blocked also apply to you.

This is how you can block someone on Facebook:

  • Click on the padlock icon in the top right corner of Facebook.
  • Then select “How do I prevent someone from harassing me?”.
  • Now you can enter the name or email address you want. After that, click “Block.”
  • Alternatively, you can select “Block” from the menu (by the title screen) in this person’s profile.
  • If this is not possible, then this person either no longer uses Facebook or has limited privacy settings. In this case, instead of blocking, you can also simply set the audience for your content. This way it is also possible that certain people cannot see your posts. We will explain how to do this in trick no. 2.

Trick #2: Determine Who Can See What

Basically, only you and your friends can post to your Chronicle. When you post something, you can decide who can see the post. It works like this:

Here’s how you determine who can read your content:

  • Click on the small arrow to the right of your name (directly above the post).
  • Select “Edit post”.
  • Under your name you will see a small arrow with a friend symbol. Click on it and then on “more options”.
  • Here you can choose if only certain groups, friends or nobody else can read this message.
  • The option “user defined” with the small gear icon allows you a more precise restriction.
  • Now you can specify with whom you want to share this content and who is not allowed to read it. You can change this setting at any time.

Trick #3: Find Out What Your Profile Looks Like To Others

Do you already know the “View through the eyes of…” feature? It allows you to see your chronicle through the eyes of your friends. This is especially handy if there is someone among your friends who you don’t want to know everything about you or who makes fun of you.

To see your history through the eyes of your friends:

  • First go to your profile (Chronicle).
  • In the menu (by the title screen) select “View from the point of view of…”.
  • Now you can see how your profile looks to people you are not friends with.
  • Do you want to know what your profile looks like to a specific person? Select “View from a specific person’s perspective”. Here you can enter the name of the person you want to see and confirm your entry with the Enter key.

Trick No. 4: Even Safer On The Road With The Chronicles Checker

You can be tagged by your friends on photos or other posts. This means that your name appears in the post and the post is also visible in your history. There is an option for you to check such posts first, before the tag appears on your friend’s chronicle as well as your own chronicle.

This is how you can activate the chronicle check:

  • In the upper right corner of Facebook, click on the small arrow and select “Settings”.
  • In the left column you will see the option “Chronicle and tagging settings”. Click on it.
  • Now you need to look for the setting “Do you want to check posts where you’ve been tagged by friends before they appear in your history?”. On the far right you can then click “Edit”.
  • Select the “Enabled” option.

You will now be notified about bookmarks and can view them before they become active.

Trick #5: Your Past On Facebook

Especially if you’ve been on Facebook for a while, you’ve probably accumulated a lot of posts in your history. Sometimes it’s a good idea to take another look at your old posts and delete some of them. After all, things, opinions and even people change over time. So it can be that there are pictures or texts that are no longer up to date. If you don’t want to delete these posts, you can still define who gets to see them.

This is how you determine who can see previous posts in your chronicle:

  • Also for this setting you need to select the arrow on the top right and click on “Settings”.
  • In the menu you will see the “Privacy” field. Click on it.
  • Find the section “Who can see my content?”. Here, click on “Do you want to limit the audience for posts you’ve shared with friends of friends or publicly?”.
  • Select “Restrict past posts.”
  • Please note that this setting cannot be easily undone!
  • People who have been tagged in posts will still be able to see those posts.

Tip #6: Improved Friends Lists

To make it easier to distinguish between close friends, “normal” friends and acquaintances, Facebook gives you the option to use special friend lists. Facebook has already done some of the work for you in this regard. The following lists are available to you without having to change anything in the settings:

  • Friends (the usual friends list, where normally all friends end up)
  • Close friends
  • Known
  • Profession
  • School
  • Family
  • Place

This distinction has the sense that you can (as already described in trick no. 2) select a target group for each of your posts. All other friends will not be able to see this content.

Of course you can also create your own lists with funny names. But today we would like to explain how you can add friends to the above mentioned lists.

This is how you use improved friends lists:

  • Go to the profile of one of your friends.
  • In the “Friends” field (you can find it directly at the title picture. It has a check mark and arrow pointing down if you have already added this friend) click on the small arrow.
  • Now you see the lists to which you can add this friend. Choose one of them.
  • You want to create your own new list? Then you can easily click on “Add to another list…”. Here you will find the option “New list…”.

Tip #7: Privacy Settings For Photos

When it comes to the settings options for photos you post, you’re spoiled for choice. The following changes are possible:

  • Quickly view photos where you are tagged.
  • Remove tags from a photo or post where you have been tagged.
  • Disable tagging suggestions for photos of you.
  • Edit privacy settings for photo albums.
  • Edit privacy settings for individual photos.
  • Share photos with people who don’t use Facebook.
  • Report abusive photos.
