When you’re planning a kid’s birthday party, there are so many different directions you could go. I honestly think that choosing a character birthday is taking the easy way out. Everything is already for sale and designed, all you need to do is pay for it. And later on when you look at pictures, you might just regret having another character party just like every other kid.

Are you embarrassed by any of your old birthday parties from when you were growing up? For me, the only ones I actually remember are the unique, timeless themes that my mom threw for me. It gets harder when kids get older and they have more of a decision on what kind of birthday party they have. But when kids are still young (one, two, and even three) you can choose the theme that you want to for their birthday party.

Theme for Boys – Space

This is a great theme because it plays off a popular current theme (Star Wars) without actually being themed with everything Star Wars. This theme would work great for a girl or a boy. Some colors you can use are red, navy blue, yellow and white. There are so many space themed options available, that you wouldn’t be embarrassed by later on. You could create a spaceship shaped invitation with a cute astronaut picture. Check Etsy.com for some space themed clip art and them follow my PicMonkey tutorial on how to create a personalized kid’s birthday party invitation for free.

Theme for Girls – Tutu Cute

I love this theme because it is perfect for a little girly girl who loves to play dress up. It is vague enough that it could be a “princess” party or a “ballerina” party or a “pink” party. It’s a timeless theme since it doesn’t identify any one of those things in particular. You can find all kinds of tutu cute birthday party items from HotRef. There are tons of things I never would have thought of and that I haven’t seen in a party store before. You can set up a Tutu Cute photo backdrop and order personalized mason jar cups.

What’s your favorite timeless and unique birthday party theme?
