After the government of Alexis Tsipras resigned less than a month ago because it was not sure whether the people of Greece would stand behind its policies and go along with the hard times with major austerity measures that Greece is facing. So now there were new elections in Greece yesterday and the Syriza party won the majority of the votes again. The new Prime Minister will therefore be the old one: Alexis Tsipras.
Alexis Tsipras Back In The Office: Will Everything Stay The Same?
Tsipras was the big winner in last night’s election. The people of Greece showed him with their vote that they will stand by him and his government’s policies. Syriza, an alliance of several parties, again won the majority of votes in last night’s election and will also have the majority of seats in the new Parliament also have the majority of seats. They won 35.5 percent, giving them 145 of the 300 seats in parliament. Since this will not yet be enough as a majority, Alexis Tsipras’ Syriza party will probably again form a coalition with the right-wing Anel party, as both parties did before the new election. Anel received 3.7 percent, giving it 10 seats in parliament. This would give the two together 155 seats and thus a majority in parliament. The question now is whether this will keep everything as it was before the new election. Tsipras has already noticed that a lot is expected of him. He is expected to demand more loans from the lenders and at the same time not burden the people in the country too much with the austerity measures that are absolutely necessary.
Opposition Without A Chance
The Opposition parties had expected much from the new election, but none of them had a chance of removing Alexis Tsipras and his Syriza party from power. The conservative Nea Dimokratia won 28.1 percent, or 75 seats, and the Pasok social democrats 6.3 percent, while the right-wing nationalists of the Golden Dawn won 6.9 percent of the vote.
Explanation Of The Difficult Words
A Prime Minister is the head of the government. In Germany, the prime minister is called the chancellor.
In the Parliament sit representatives of the people, who are supposed to make good policies for the people. They are elected by all people of age in a country. The German parliament is called the Bundestag.
Opposition parties are the parties that are not involved in the government in the parliament, but still have seats in the parliament. In Germany, these are currently the parties Die Linke and Bündnis 90/Die Grünen.
