On the inside, I still feel like I just graduated high school despite the fact that I’m a grown woman with 3 kids. I still remember the early days of the internet, including chat rooms and MySpace. I used to Instant Message (IM) friends on AOL Messenger (AIM) and I was around for the early years of BTW, BRB and LOL.
If You Still Use LOL, You’re Probably Middle-Aged
As I get older though, I am less likely to check out new social media. Here’s a secret – I don’t have SnapChat, and I don’t really want one! That’s one of the first signs of being “old” isn’t it? The inability to understand what these crazy kids are doing these days? That’s where I’m at.
There’s also a whole fleet of new words I don’t understand. I literally had to Google “new slang” to even come up with this list. If you know what 3 or more of these mean, then you’re either still a cool mom or you spend way too much time on the internet.
The New Slang
- On fleek
- Ratchet
- Slaying
- Snatched
- Boots
- Gifs
- AF
- Ship
- Ratchet
- Thirsty
Remember back in the day the story about a clueless mom saying LOL (laugh out loud) at a totally inappropriate time because she thinks it means something completely different (lots of love). I’m like that with “Netflix and chill”. Sure, I like to Netflix and chill…wait, it means WHAT?
One term I have come to know and love though is “I can’t even.” At first I thought it was dumb, but it is the PERFECT representation of my life sometimes. At the end of a hard day parenting my 3 kids under 4, the only thing I want to say is, “I can’t even.”
Hi Kristen! I’m in my late 20’s and yah, I still use the word Lol! Haha Made me feel too old reading your post but enjoyed it as much! High five on the the google’-ing new slang every now and then! I so totally can relate!
Cheers to getting older! Glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
