Maybe your parents have often been annoying you when they keep telling you to study hard at school. But even if this is not always well received, in most cases they are right. A new study by the Caritas shows that more and more students in Germany are leaving school without a diploma.

Every 20th Is Without A Diploma
Caritas experts looked at the statistics from 2013. They found that one in 20 students leaves school without at least a secondary school diploma. However, this does not apply to all of Germany; there are large differences within the country. Most school leavers with a proper school-leaving qualification are in Bavaria and Hamburg. Things look very bad in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where one in ten students fails to graduate. But there are also problems in other states, such as North Rhine-Westphalia. Particularly in the city Gelsenkirchen the number of students without a high school diploma is particularly high. Eleven percent of all students here fail to graduate.
Why Is A School-Leaving Qualification So Important?
Even if it is annoying for many children, it must be clearly mentioned how important a school leaving certificate is for the future. Without a diploma, there is hardly any chance of finding an apprenticeship after school and learning a good profession. This, in turn, is important for the rest of your life, because you can only earn good money with a good job. If you don’t have a school degree, you usually end up unemployed and have very little money to live on.
