Sport Keeps You Fit

We live in the age of information. Whether on TV, the Internet, or in the newspaper, everywhere you look there’s talk of how to live healthily and avoid illness. This includes not only a balanced diet, with which you take all the necessary nutrients. Every person should do enough sports to keep themselves healthy.

The so-called couch potatoes, i.e. people who only hang around on the couch and hardly move, are not doing themselves any good. How you can do better, you will learn today.

Long Live Sports

Why is it always said that sports are so healthy? What’s so great about it that it should absolutely be a part of our lives?

To answer this question, we need to go back in time a bit. Just a few hundred years ago, people were moving around a lot more than they do today. There were no cars yet and people had to walk a lot or travel by horse. In any case, it was necessary to expose oneself to greater efforts than is the case today. In fact, a long time ago, most people were self-sufficient as small farmers. Those who did not have land went hunting. You had to move around to get food.

Today, things are very different. Even the very young move much less than our ancestors did. Especially in urban areas, some kids hardly go outside. They sit in front of the PC, play on the Playstation or have no free time anyway because they are constantly busy with school, piano lessons and co.

When you get older, the situation doesn’t really improve either. Many choose an office job where you mostly just sit. Other fields of activity also hardly require any movement.

But the fact is that the human body is designed to move for a few hours every day. If we do not do this, sooner or later it will suffer. Bones are broken down, we gain weight and muscle tissue becomes flabby. Then you get back pain, brittle bones, and weak circulation. You get tired and at some point, you don’t feel like doing sports anymore.

Tip for girls: Young women, in particular, should make sure they get as much exercise as possible. Ball sports, endurance sports, and weight training strengthen the young bones. This is important because women start to lose weight after menopause. That’s why you should do as much sport as possible when you’re young so that you’ll still be fit when you get older.

Another reason to exercise regularly: Weight loss. The current beauty craze and the willowy beauty ideal tempt many kids to starve themselves slim. Not infrequently, they develop an eating disorder or suffer from low self-esteem. This is not necessary. After all, a change in diet and exercise not only makes you more energetic but also helps you to maintain your ideal weight in the long term. Don’t forget: if you exercise, you can also treat yourself to something sweet now and then without having to count calories.

Last but not least, exercise is healthy because it has a positive effect on our mental health. More and more kids are suffering from mental problems. They get depressed and don’t feel like doing anything anymore. Kids affected by these problems definitely need therapy and possibly medical support. In addition, regular sporting activity can help to permanently restore well-being.

Overcoming The Inner Obstacle

Because many people are used to not having to move much, they find it difficult to change anything. They find many excuses not to feel guilty. This may work quite well for a while. But sooner or later, they start to feel the consequences. Neck pain, headaches, and other complaints usually have to do with the fact that the body has become weak and sluggish. Exercise in the fresh air can help people to generally feel better in their own skin again. To do so, however, you first have to overcome your inner stubbornness. This is not an easy undertaking and can sometimes take a while. Don’t despair if you’re going through another lazy phase and can’t bring yourself to exercise. Give yourself a break and stay in the now. Don’t think about what you should have done last week. Take today as an opportunity to try a little harder again.

To make it as hard as possible for your inner bastard, we’ve rounded up the most common excuses for being lazy. Read on to find out why these are just excuses and not really good reasons not to exercise.

Excuse No. 1: It’s Too Cold In Winter, Too Hot In Summer

We humans are not as sensitive as we think. Your body should and must withstand a lot. That’s why it’s no problem to run a lap around the block even in cool temperatures. Because: There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. If you dress appropriately, you won’t get sick right away if it’s a little chilly outside.

The same is true in the summer. Of course, it’s more strenuous to go running or lift weights in the summer heat. That’s why in the warmer months it’s a good idea to do some exercise right after getting up in the morning because it’s still comparatively cool then. In the evening, too, the temperatures are just right for being active.

Now, please don’t think that you have to exercise in the summer under scorching heat at lunchtime. It doesn’t have to be that way and it does more harm than good. Rather, limit yourself to the cooler times of the day.

Excuse No. 2: I Can’t Afford Expensive Sports Equipment

Depending on what sports you want to do, your hobby can be quite expensive. Sporting goods for extreme, winter, and trend sports are usually quite expensive to buy. But if you can’t afford something like that, that’s no reason to sit at home.

Endurance sports like running, cycling, or swimming cost almost no money. All you need is a pair of running shoes and some airy clothes. You can get started and run a few miles.

As you can see, a tight budget can’t stop you from doing something good for your body. By the way, a long run can be very relaxing and enjoyable if you listen to music on your cell phone or MP3 player while you’re doing it and can switch off your mind.

Excuse No. 3: After Work Or School I’m Much Too Tired For Sports

Behind this excuse is the false assumption that you can only do sports when you are fresh and alert. It is true that sport is a strenuous thing. However, once you start doing it, your circulation ramps up and you feel more alert than before. So tiredness is not an excuse for not doing sports.

For most people, it’s actually not a problem that the sport itself is strenuous. The far bigger hurdle is overcoming it to do something. Turning off the TV and going outside can be quite difficult. That’s why you shouldn’t think about it for too long, just do it without compromise. Find out when it’s easiest for you to get yourself to do some exercise. Get into the habit of exercising regularly at that time of day. Don’t argue with yourself or your pig dog, but stick strictly to your exercise plan.

Excuse No. 4: I Can’t Exercise Because I Have Back Pain

If you suffer from a chronic disease, joint pain, or back pain, you should see a doctor. Most doctors recommend that their patients exercise regularly. Many complaints can be alleviated if one strengthens the corresponding muscles and gets the circulation going with sports.

Just sitting around and doing nothing is much more harmful to your body than strengthening it gently and slowly. Yoga, remedial gymnastics, or Nordic walking are a good alternative for people who have done little exercise and suffer from pain.

Be sure to check with your doctor if you are in pain. Ask what kind of sport is suitable for you.

Excuse No. 5: I Don’t Have Time For Sports

Sports cost as much time as any other hobby. A short, half-hour run can be intense and takes less time than playing computer games. Because, be honest: how much time do you spend in front of the TV, computer, or otherwise passively on the couch? Surely you can spare a little time now and then to continue your workout.

The excuse “I don’t have time.” usually means “I don’t feel like it.” So remember to be honest with yourself.

Sometimes it helps to exercise regularly with a group. That way, you’re kind of forced to get yourself up weekly (or several times a week) to work out at the club. This regularity helps keep you from getting lazy again.

As soon as you give any of the above excuses as a reason to hang around lazily, remind yourself that you’re just cheating yourself. Wipe out your inner bastard by not listening to him.

Exercise For Sick People

As mentioned earlier, even sick people can and should exercise. Of course, it depends on what kind of illness it is. Not everyone can or should do intense weight training or go running. Fitness trainers and doctors are the right people to talk to if you are not sure what is okay for your body and what is not.

You may be prescribed physical therapy. If this is the case, please discuss with your therapist whether you are allowed to do sports before or after the therapy, and if so, which ones. Basically, physiotherapy itself helps to strengthen your muscles and is a good first start.

Too Much Of A Good Thing

Of course, you should not overdo it with sports. That can happen quite quickly. People who were lazy couch potatoes yesterday are not infrequently adrenaline junkies a little later, doing sports for hours every day.

After all, once you get to know the beneficial effects of regular physical activity, you can become downright addicted to it.

People with eating disorders also tend to exhibit extreme exercise behavior. They sometimes exercise more than is good for them.

If you exercise a lot and feel like you can’t control it, please consult your doctor. You might want to cut back a bit and try to find a good middle ground for yourself.

Get Outdoors Or Hit The Gym?

You’ve been studying why exercise is good for your body. Ideally, you’ve realized that it doesn’t make sense to cheat yourself with excuses. Maybe you’ve even conquered your inner pig dog and have already started your regular workout.

Maybe you’ve already asked yourself whether it’s better to go to the gym or to exercise outside. This is a question that everyone has to answer for themselves. It doesn’t make much sense to drive to the gym to spend an hour on the treadmill.

In the summer, the fitness center can be quite uncomfortable. Swimming in the cool water or a relaxing bike ride is a better choice then. It’s also important that you spend a lot of time outside in the fresh air. Use the summer to be outside as much as possible. In the evening, when it rains or storms, you can go to the gym.

In the winter, the center is a great place to stay fit despite unpleasant weather conditions and avoid putting on Christmas fat.

Sports That Are Fun

Once you’ve decided to start exercising, you should start thinking about what all you could do. The more varied your workout is, the better. Try to avoid one-sided stress and preferably do several different sports.

Basically, you should do something that you really enjoy. Don’t join a club that you don’t really like just because your best friend does. Sooner or later it will become too stupid for you and you will just sit in front of the TV again.

Endurance Sports

Endurance sports are always available, don’t cost much, and don’t require a class or anything. Running, swimming, biking, and hiking will strengthen your heart and keep you feeling great all around. This is because the heart of someone who does endurance sports has to exert less effort than an untrained heart. That’s why even strength athletes shouldn’t forgo doing endurance sports from time to time.

Extreme Sports

Extreme sports are those activities that we are not actually built for. That is why they give us a very special “kick”. Extreme athletes are under adrenaline because they often find themselves in mortal danger.

Nevertheless, some extreme sports can be tried out in a protected setting even as a child. For example, you can go climbing, secured, in a climbing hall without having to fear serious injury.

Extreme sports have the great advantage that they are a lot of fun. You usually don’t notice that you are doing sports. Nevertheless, diving, climbing, and the like can be very strenuous. For most extreme sports, it is recommended to attend a beginner’s course. That way, you learn the basics and techniques to do it right. In addition, for each sport, there are special safety instructions that you need to know and follow.

Unlike endurance sports, extreme sports are a bit more involved. You usually can’t go scuba diving or rock climbing alone. You need a partner to watch over you. Only very experienced athletes climb all by themselves, belaying themselves. So, unfortunately, you’re dependent on someone else having time, so you have to make contacts in the field first.

Many climbing gyms offer free trial climbing lessons. If you are interested, ask at the sports club in your hometown.

Trend Sports

Trend sports are a dime a dozen. Almost every year there are new fun ways to get active. Slacklining, wakeboarding and blobbing are examples of popular trend sports.

These activities are not always very expensive. A slackline is quick and can be saved without much effort. While balancing, you learn to train your coordination skills and balance and become increasingly skilled. This has a positive effect on other sports such as climbing.

Trend sports are usually done in groups. It’s more fun that way, and you can always chat a bit and make new contacts along the way.

Winter sports

Winter sports are not cheap fun either. But if you want a pair of skis or a snowboard for your birthday, it is halfway. Then you only have to pay for the lift ticket.

Winter sports have to be learned together with friends, parents, or a teacher before you can really start. This can take a few days and be quite exhausting. But once you’ve got the hang of it, you won’t want to stop so quickly. If you go on a skiing trip, you’ll be on the move all day without getting bored.

Winter sports are fun and part of the culture in some countries. In Austria, for example, it’s common for even younger kids to learn how to ski. This makes it a communal social sport that not only keeps you fit but never gets boring.
