The 9 Best Baby Bottles – Guide

Baby bottles not only have a different shape and different nipples, but are also made of different materials. Since they are essential for feeding the baby, it is important to choose the right baby bottle.

We have summarized which teat is the right one for your offspring and much more information about baby bottles in a checklist for you. You can find a selection of different baby bottles in our product recommendations.

Checklist For Baby Bottles

The Size Of The Bottle
  • A very important criterion when choosing a bottle is the right size.
  • Small bottles with less than 200 ml capacity are sufficient for babies.
  • After a few weeks, your baby’s appetite will increase and you should switch to bottles with more than 200 ml capacity.
The Hole Size
  • The different sizes ensure the right permeability or drinking speed for different liquids. For very thin liquids such as tea or breast milk, a size S teat with a fairly small hole should be used. Size M should be used for follow-on milk and size L is also suitable for follow-on milk but also for viscous food such as porridge. Here, too, the respective manufacturer’s instructions should be observed.
The Right Teat
  • The right te at must be chosen for each bottle.
  • They are usually made of silicone or latex.
  • In general, the teat should be flexible and soft and have a jaw-friendly shape so that it can adapt optimally to your child’s palate. A slightly roughened surface prevents the teat from slipping out of the baby’s mouth.
  • Manufacturers of baby bottles offer different teat sizes. Generally, there are three teat sizes: One for infants ages 0 to 6 months, one for toddlers up to 18 months, and one size for children 18 months and older. Depending on the manufacturer, age recommendations may vary
Material
  • Most baby bottles are made of glass or plastic.
  • Glass breaks more easily, but is easy to keep clean.
  • Plastic is quite sturdy and also lighter than glass.

Baby Bottles Advice

Which baby bottles are right for you?

Baby bottles are often in use and should be chosen carefully. If you plan to feed your baby often with the bottle, then it is worthwhile to purchase several baby bottles, so that you always have one handy. The individual baby bottles from different brands have of course different shapes, but above all, they are not all made of the same material. Therefore, I would like to help you here in deciding which material your baby bottle should be made of.

Do you want baby bottles made of plastic or glass?

If you would rather have baby bottles made of plastic, then you are Type A. Baby bottles made of plastic are not sensitive and can withstand being dropped. They are also lighter than glass baby bottles. These, on the other hand, are particularly hygienic, environmentally friendly, and also do not discolor. If you prefer to have a baby bottle made of glass, then you are type B.

Do you prefer plastic baby bottles?

You are type A!

Plastic baby bottles are so popular for a reason. They are particularly light, so even longer feedings are not exhausting and babies can hold the plastic bottles themselves. They are also robust and can withstand being dropped. For you, the MAM Anti-Colic Starter Set, the Medela Baby Bottle Set, the Philips Avent Naturnah Newborn Set, and the Mimijumi Newborn Baby Bottles. Of course, I made sure that all products prevent colic and are BPA-free.

The MAM Anti-Colic Starter Set

The great baby bottle set from MAM includes eight baby bottles at once, plus a drinking spout, the “Hold my Bottle” handle for toddlers, and a newborn pacifier. Thus, the MAM Anti-Colic Set accompanies your child from birth and grows with it. Due to the high number of bottles, the set is also particularly suitable for complete bottle feeding. The bottles are made of plastic and very light so that they can be easily held by infants.

Especially convenient is that for sterilization in the microwave no extra device is necessary.

The Medela Baby Bottle Set

Especially if you plan to pump breast milk more often, the Medela Baby Bottle Set is perfect for you. The set includes not only 4 baby bottles, but also 5 Medela Pump & Safe bags for storing breast milk. So you can easily pump, store and feed at any time, very flexibly. With the included Calma teat, your baby will suckle just like at your breast. It controls the flow of milk and prevents your baby from swallowing air and causing unpleasant colic.

The Philips Avent Naturnah Newborn Set

The baby bottles from Philips have a practical size and are characterized by a particularly flexible teat. This teat is also designed to protect against suction confusion with its breast-like shape and has an ergonomic shape. The set includes two small bottles with 125 ml and two larger ones with 260 ml capacity.

The practical baby bottle set also includes a pacifier for newborns and a practical brush for hygienic cleaning of the bottle. Of course, the bottles should also be sterilized, especially in the first months.

Mimijumi baby bottles

The Mimijumi baby bottles are only available individually or in a 2-pack and are not that widely available yet. They most closely resemble the female breast compared to my other baby bottle recommendations, so they are especially good for avoiding suckling confusion. They also have a non-slip bottom and convenient caps for milk storage.

Really a great alternative to other baby bottles – but if you need more baby bottles because you bottle feed frequently, they are quite expensive to purchase.

Would you rather have glass baby bottles?

You are type B!

Baby bottles made of glass are especially hygienic because no cracks form in which bacteria can accumulate. They are also the perfect choice for environmentally conscious parents. For you, the NUK Starter Set First Choice is a perfect choice.

The NUK First Choice Starter Set contains two small baby bottles with a teat for the first months, as well as two larger bottles with a 240 ml filling capacity. The included bottle box can hold up to 6 NUK baby bottles.

The teat has an ergonomic shape and extra-wide lip support for a natural sucking sensation. Included are two teats, one for breast milk and tea and one for milk and formula. This ensures a perfect milk flow. Of course, the NUK baby bottles with the NUK Anti-Colic Air System also prevent unpleasant colic.

Baby bottles info

Before buying baby bottles, there are a lot of things to consider, so I have already introduced you to some good products in my baby bottle test and also helped you decide which drinking bottle now fits best to you and your needs. But here you get all the important information about baby bottles and what you should look for when buying.

Baby bottles made of glass or plastic?

Plastic baby bottles are still very popular with parents and have some advantages. However, more and more parents are looking for baby bottles made of glass. Here you can learn about the advantages and disadvantages of these two materials.

Plastic Baby Bottles

The biggest advantage of baby bottles made of plastic, is their lightweight. They are light and can be shaped very flexibly during production. Thanks to their low weight, they are comfortable to hold even during longer feeding sessions. The little ones are also happy about this because they can hold the lightweight baby bottles themselves much sooner than the glass version. They are also very robust and can even be dropped from time to time.

Many parents have concerns about possible harmful substances in the plastic. Normally, however, the plastics used are harmless. Plasticizers such as BPA have even been banned by law. Still, it never hurts to take a second look at the information about the material.

The disadvantage of baby bottles made of plastic is that they need to be cleaned particularly thoroughly. The surface is also very susceptible to scratches and cracks in which bacteria can quickly collect. Therefore, the bottles should be checked regularly and replaced if necessary. Normally, plastic bottles are not suitable for the microwave, as they are less resistant to heat.

The bottles should be cleaned relatively quickly so that the milk residues do not settle. It is also advisable to always use a baby bottle only for milk or for tea because they are not as odorless and tasteless as baby bottles made of glass.

Glass Baby Bottles

Very many parents are now looking again at baby bottles made of glass. The advantages are obvious: they are particularly durable and also environmentally friendly. Baby bottles made of glass can withstand higher temperatures without any problems and can be easily cleaned in the dishwasher as often as desired, without any signs of wear.

So glass baby bottles are super easy to clean and also particularly hygienic, as no cracks can form in the material. Another advantage over the baby bottles made of plastic is that they do not discolor.

The big disadvantage is that the glass bottles are of course quickly broken if they do fall down and then that’s done with the longevity. Babies should never suck on a glass bottle unsupervised, so they can not cut themselves on the shards, should it break. Another disadvantage is that they are somewhat heavier than plastic baby bottles and babies must therefore be somewhat stronger to be able to hold them themselves.

Cleaning The Baby Bottles

Especially in the first months of your baby’s life, the immune system is not yet fully developed and very susceptible to diseases. Therefore, it is important to clean the baby bottles regularly and thoroughly.

Even before the first use, it is best to sterilize the baby bottle, either with a practical sterilizer or in boiling water. Especially baby bottles made of plastic should always be cleaned immediately after feeding so that no milk residue is left behind. Baby bottles and accessories should also be sterilized at least once a day, but better after each use.

Cleaning in the dishwasher without sterilizing is not recommended, as sufficient hygiene cannot be guaranteed. For baby bottles made of plastic, you should observe the recommended maximum temperature for cleaning.
