The 9 Best Diaper Pails – Guide

There is nothing that smells as unique as a newborn. Unfortunately, the smell of full diapers is not quite as pleasant. You don’t want the smell of it all over the place? Understandable! A diaper pail can really be worth its weight in gold. Many parents don’t even know diaper pails exist until they’re desperate to find a way to dispose of diapers in the most odorless way possible, without having to run to the garbage cans in front of the house every time.

We go with you on the search for the right diaper pail. We have searched for the best models in different price categories for you and also give you some information in our checklist, what you should look for when buying a diaper pail.

Have fun reading and shopping.

Diaper Pail Checklist

Size
  • The size of the diaper pail depends, of course, primarily on the available space.
  • In general, larger di aper pails are preferable , since smaller models are naturally full more quickly and must be emptied more frequently.
  • Models with a large capacity can easily hold up to 25 or even 30 diapers.
  • Very large models, which can even hold up to 50 di apers, are recommended for households with twins, for example.
Design
  • Most diaper pails are kept rather simple and thus fit well into any baby room interior.
  • It makes sense to have a one-handed operation, which makes your life easier – especially with a full diaper in your hand.
  • Some models are extra high, so that you have to bend down less. This is to relieve the strain on your back.
Odorless
  • One of the most important selection criteria is that the diaper pail reliably traps odors, ensuring odor neutrality in the room.
  • There are diaper pails with and without refill cassettes.
  • In the case of models with a refill cassette, you are often tied to the manufacturer’s products, which are specially designed for the particular diaper pail system. This usually entails high follow-up costs.
  • Other models can be used with standard garbage bags.
  • Diaper pails that are used with regular garbage bags can also be used as trash cans later on.
  • A popular diaper pail system is the Twister, where each diaper is individually wrapped in a small trash bag using a foil tube. The Twister usually only works with a special cassette and is considered to be particularly odor-proof.
  • There are also diaper pails with a cassette and foil tube, but without the Twister function. In that case, the foil tube is gradually filled with diapers and then disposed of.
  • If the diaper pail works with normal garbage bags, the opening to the inside of the pail is usually kept closed, so that here, too, little to no odor can escape to the outside and you no longer come into contact with the used and disposed of diapers.

Here you can find the top 9 most popular diaper pails.

Diaper Pail Advice

Which diaper pail suits me? – How to find the right model very quickly!

A diaper pail is one of the absolute must-haves in the nursery! When choosing the right model, it depends primarily on how much odor is okay for you. Decisive here is also the frequency of the diaper pail – emptying. Do you take the contents of the diaper pail away every day, or do several days pass?
If you are still breastfeeding or bottle-feeding your baby, the consistency and smell of the diaper contents will be different. However, as soon as you start with complimentary food, your child’s diaper may smell more unpleasant. Also relevant is how much money you want to spend on a diaper pail. We show you which models are available and which are suitable for you.

Diaper pail – what models are there?

Diaper pail with refill cassettes:

You have a choice between a diaper twister, which packs diapers individually, and a regular diaper pail, which also works with refill cassettes. A refill cassette consists of a bag tube and a plastic ring in which it is located. The advantage is that these models are very odor-proof, but you always have to buy the cassettes.

Diaper pail without refill cassettes:

These diaper pails work entirely without refill cassettes, but with standard garbage bags. The trash cans are nevertheless well designed so that most models do not have any noticeable odor disadvantages compared to diaper pails with refill cassettes. Advantage: You don’t always have to buy expensive refill cassettes and you have to get very close to the garbage can to notice an unpleasant smell.

The first and most important question to find the right diaper pail is always how much diaper smell is okay for you.

You are type A – The neutral type!

You want your apartment to always stay nice and neutral and free of diaper odors. You are happy to pay a little more money for this.

My Recommendation

I recommend a diaper pail with a refill cartridge. The Sangenic tec Diaper Twister and the Angelcare Comfort Plus

, are perfect for you. Both are characterized by their excellent odor density and their large capacity. However, there are follow-up costs due to the purchase of the refill cassettes and you also produce a lot of waste. Therefore, another question arises: Is it important to you to produce as little waste as possible?

The Angelcare diaper pail is not as environmentally friendly as the Chicco model

, for example, but at least the diapers are packaged in one piece and not individually. So you produce a little less waste than with the model from Sangenic. If you just want a super odor-proof diaper pail, the choice between my two recommendations for type A is still open to you.

The Angelcare Comfort Plus diaper

pail keeps film consumption to a minimum, making it not only better for the environment than other models with refill cartridges, but also cheaper in the long run. This is because the diapers are not individually packed here, but stored in a tube that reliably does not let any odors out through its layers. The Angelcare diaper pail is also pleasantly high, which makes it more comfortable to use. Angelcare offers two models: the Angelcare diaper pail Comfort and Deluxe. Both reliably perform their task, the only difference is in the operation. While the Comfort model opens the lid and puts the diaper inside, the Deluxe opens with a convenient foot pedal. Which version you find better is a matter of taste, both models can be operated with one hand.

The Sangenic tec diaper twisteris also well made and works with a refill cartridge system. The diaper is placed in the opening, then you twist the ring around the opening, which twists the diaper into the film and packs it airtight. The refill cassettes are mostly available as 6-pack or 12-pack. The follow-up costs are therefore somewhat higher than with other diaper pails, but the Sangenic Diaper Twister protects 100 percent against odors.

You are Type B – The flexible type!

You have a child, so it can sometimes smell a little, but it should not be too much.

My Recommendation

I recommend a diaper pail with a twist-off cap that does not require refills. The Diaper Champ model and the Diaper Box, fit type B very well. Both of my recommendations can be operated with one hand, hold 30 diapers and by using trash bags, you even save money in the long run. So you save the environment and avoid the unpleasant diaper odors as far as possible.

The Diaper Champis

easy and practical to use. The diaper is placed in the opening. A lever on the side of the garbage can rotates the head of the bucket, dropping the diaper inside. The Diaper Champ should be used exclusively for diapers, as smaller waste, such as fresh wipes could easily break the mechanism.

Advantage: The Diaper Champeven has an additional child safety lock and is available in three sizes.

For the Chicco diaper pail, only 25 liters of garbage bags are needed, which means that the follow-up costs for this model are also very low. The operation of the model from Chicco is also simple: put the diaper in the opening, press the lever and the diaper is gone.

You are Type C – The pragmatic type

“Diapers just smell, but I put the diaper pail on the balcony anyway and take the trash out regularly. What’s the point of too many bells and whistles?”

My recommendation

For Type C, a simple basic model will do, which is why I recommend Rotho’s diaper pail. It only holds 15-20 diapers, but at 12 euros it’s pretty cheap and particularly environmentally friendly. He just needs 20 liters of garbage bags, which also makes the follow-up costs very low. However, you have to make concessions in terms of odor density and comfort, since this bucket has an unfavorable height, it is recommended to place it elevated. When the lid is closed, the diaper pail is odorless and does what it should. It only becomes unpleasant when you open the lid. This makes the Rotho diaper pail a great, inexpensive alternative that reliably prevents unpleasant odors when the lid is closed.

Diaper Pail Info

How to find the ideal diaper pail?

What are the advantages of a diaper pail?

Full diapers can smell really unpleasant. Especially if you haven’t managed to take the trash away in time with the baby. Every time you open the garbage can, the smell comes out and spreads throughout the whole apartment.
To prevent this from happening, there are odor-proof diaper pails that avoid this. The advantages here are quite obvious:

  • The diapers are packed odor-proof.
  • Many diapers fit in the diaper pail.
  • You don’t have to run to the trash can right away.
  • Diaper pails are ideally one-handed, perfect if you have your baby in your arms right now.

A diaper pail reliably prevents the spread of bad odors. Especially from the change from breast milk to baby food, the diaper smell can intensify again. Therefore, it is directly worthwhile to acquire a good diaper pail. Especially if you live in an apartment building, where you would have to walk up many stairs to get every single diaper outside into the garbage can, you can hardly do without a good diaper pail, in which you can collect the diapers first.

What you should look for when buying?

You have to decide how important it is to you that no odors escape and how much you want to spend on a diaper pail. Do you also want to produce as little waste as possible? In principle, you have the choice between two different systems.

System 1: The diaper pail with refill cassette – no odor, but follow-up costs.

The smell of diapers bothers you? With the Angelcare Comfort Plus or the Tommee Tippee Sangenic Tec, it doesn’t have to be that way anymore. The diapers are twisted airtight in a film and so the unpleasant odors are avoided. The one-handed operation also offers a high level of comfort. One hand can always stay with your child and the diaper is disposed of in no time.
The purchase cost is also low, but you always have to buy refill cartridges, so you have follow-up costs. Due to the large number of diapers that you will consume, you should not underestimate this.

Odor-Proof and Inexpensive

You don’t want to spend a lot of money, save the cost of refill cartridges and still have an odor-free diaper pail?
A diaper pail that allows you to use standard trash bags is perfect for you. Our recommendation is the Chicco Diaper Box. It has a higher initial cost, but it really is cheaper in the long run.

The classic diaper pail – sacrifices in comfort, but the cheapest solution!

There are also very simple diaper pails, which are reduced to the bare essentials. However, when you open the lid, you can smell the diapers, so you should empty this pail more often. If you don’t mind, you can safely choose our recommendation, the Rotho diaper pail. You can use it with or without a garbage bag and have hardly any or no follow-up costs. Regular cleaning is essential, however, as the bin liners usually do not seal tightly.

Worth Knowing

How do I clean the diaper pail?

In the long run, the diaper pail can take on an unpleasant odor of its own if you don’t clean it regularly. Unfortunately, it is usually not enough to simply rely on water and a cleaning agent, as this does not kill the germs that logically accumulate very quickly in the diaper pail due to its contents.

Therefore, the germs should be killed with a good disinfectant spray. Against already existing odor, but less against germs, home remedies can also help. These include the all-rounder baking soda. Simply sprinkle the inside of the bucket with the powder and wait a few hours, then wash it off. As a permanent solution, a few coffee beans can also be placed at the bottom of the diaper pail, as these absorb odors and neutralize them. In very hard cases, vinegar water or citric acid can also be used, however, especially with vinegar arises the problem that its smell is accepted by the diaper pail – better than diaper smell but also not pleasant.

This is how you avoid odor development in the diaper pail right from the start!

Of course, you should clean the diaper pail regularly for hygienic reasons alone. But there are a few other ways you can avoid odors from the very beginning. In any case, you should empty the diaper pail regularly, that is, at least every two days. Also, it is better to place the pail in a shady place. Placing it in a sunny window will cause the plastic to heat up, making it more susceptible to odors.
