The 9 Best Diapers – Guide

The 9 Best Diapers – Guide

On average, a child needs 4500 diapers until it is dry, some even up to 6000! Therefore, it is advisable to find out exactly about options and choose the right diaper for your darling. In the past, classic cloth diapers were used. Today, in addition to disposable diapers, there are also various gadgets for reusable diapers that support absorbency and care.

Today we present you the top 9 diapers, because every baby is different. Our checklist provides you with the most important facts and our product recommendations support you in the final selection.

Diapers Checklist

Types
  • Disposable diapers are available as conventional diapers with Velcro / adhesive fasteners or as diaper underpants (underpants). Conventional disposable diapers are difficult to biodegrade.
  • Eco-diapers are more environmentally friendly because they are made of biodegradable materials.
  • Diaper underpants can be put on and taken off by your child like underpants – handy for potty training!
  • Reusable cloth diapers can easily be washed in the washing machine.
Advantages and Disadvantages
  • Disposable diapers cause higher follow-up costs and a lot of waste, but they are easier to use.
  • While cloth diapers are more environmentally friendly, there are higher water and electricity costs due to cleaning.
  • They are also a bit more cumbersome to use and the initial cost is high.
Sizes
  • The size or fit of the diaper depends on the weight of your child.
  • Newborns and premature babies wear size 0 or 1. These diapers also sometimes have a control strip that indicates whether the diaper is wet.
  • Children 3 to 4 years old need a size 6 to 8.
  • You can tell if you’ve chosen the right diaper size for your child if the diaper covers the bottom properly, doesn’t leak, and fits tightly around the tummy and legs without leaving pressure points.
Reusable Diapers
  • There are different cloth diaper systems and many cute designs.
  • Some cloth diapers are multi-piece: they then consist of an insert and an overpant.
  • Liners are washed after each use, and you can ideally use the overpants for an entire day.
  • Other cloth diapers are one-piece. After use, the entire diaper is washed directly.
  • Reusable diapers are often variably adjustable to your child’s size with snaps.
Material and Fit
  • When it comes to diapers, look for certified materials that are free of harmful substances (Oeko-Tex).
  • Since each manufacturer has developed its own material composition, it can happen that the diapers are well tolerated by one child, but not by another.
  • It is the same with the fit. Change the size or brand if the diaper leaks frequently, your child gets pressure points or skin irritations.
Fit
  • The diaper should not be too big or too small.
  • If the diaper is too big, everything will run past the diaper.
  • If the diaper is too small, it cuts in and also leads to leakage.

Diaper Advice

Which diaper fits me and my baby?

The diaper selection is large! We often can’t do without diapers, as the Chinese do with slit pants. With the abundance of offers it is difficult to keep the overview and to find the suitable diaper. If you are still looking for the perfect diaper, the following decision-making process will help you. First ask yourself the question.

Do you want a disposable or reusable diaper?

With the disposable diaper you have the least amount of work. They are available from many companies in different sizes and designed differently for each time of day. However, diapers made from unnatural materials often contain kerosene and pollutants from petroleum products. The diapers are often tested on animals and are therefore not vegan.

Cloth diapers, on the other hand, are more expensive to purchase, but in the end are much less expensive than disposable diapers. Reusable diapers are also quite easy to clean, more environmentally friendly and dry quickly. In addition, they come in very beautiful and versatile designs. However, they produce more laundry and are somewhat less practical for travel than their disposable counterparts.

Whether you choose the cloth diaper, which is easier on your wallet and the environment, or the disposable diaper, which many parents find to be more hygienic with increased waste production, your baby’s well-being always comes first. So pay attention to how your child accepts the diaper and which is ultimately the best solution.

You want disposable diapers?

You are type A!

The disposable option, which is the least labor-intensive and can be easily disposed of in the residual waste, is often the most popular option.

Pampers Baby Dry

Pampers Baby Dry

– diapers have been around forever and are constantly evolving. Extra dryness layer helps to distribute moisture and keep it away from baby’s skin. Elastic side cuffs provide a comfortable fit. Air can circulate through breathable air channels, keeping baby’s butt dry.

A modern classic!

Chlorine-, natural latex- and fragrance-free di

aper represents the ecological option of disposable diapers. With a three-layer absorbent core, it provides fast absorption of liquid. An elastic waistband ensures a snug fit.

Babybett Entscheidungsbaum Typ B

You want reusable cloth diapers?

You are type B!

Cloth diapers are the cheaper and more environmentally friendly option of diapers. They can be washed and do not produce waste.

Odenwälder gauze diaper

The gauze diaper is especially characterized by its gentle to the skin and absorbent material. 100% cotton with reinforced edges and soft fabric can be used as a muslin diaper, pad as well as a burp cloth. The diaper can be washed at up to 60 degrees, so that all pathogens are killed.

A real all-rounder!

LittleBloom cloth diapers – set

The set consists of 12 reusable diapers, one microfiber and 2 bamboo liners. The diapers are adjustable by snaps to the size and can grow with the baby. Hypoallergenic and soft material ensures comfort.

Everything mother and baby need for diapering!

Bambino Mio

The diaper overpants come in many cute patterns and designs. The lightweight fabric allows the baby a great freedom of movement. The great advantage of the overpants is that they do not need to be changed and washed every time you change diapers. With the additional purchase of paper fleece, the pants are laid out. When diapering, only the fleece or the preferred diaper liner is then changed. If something does go wrong, the overpants can be washed at 60 degrees.

In the cuteness contest, the diaper overpants gets the first prize!

Diaper Info

This is what you should pay attention to when wearing the diaper:

Size determines comfort. The size of the child, the weight and the fit are key criteria.

Acute inflammation of the bottom is called diaper dermatitis or diaper rash. This can be triggered by constant diapering, cleaning and moisture. If your baby’s bottom is already affected, it is essential to work with air. So also sometimes leave the diaper completely away, so that the skin can breathe. A suitable diaper offers all-round leakage protection. Everything should be tight at the back, belly and sides. At the same time, the child can move without problems and the bed remains dry. However, leakage can also be due to the wrong diaper size. Sometimes a change of brand helps.

What you should look for when buying diapers:

Since babies are very different in terms of body build, manufacturer’s specifications of diaper size on the packages of disposable diapers may differ. Also, the cut of the diaper can be responsible for the fact that the brand you have chosen does not fit. Therefore, to find the best diaper, you should try a few options. The advantage of gauze and cloth diapers here is that they can better adapt to the individual needs of the baby.

My choice is based on the factors of cooling (especially important for male babies because of spermatogenesis), diaper climate (moist heat can cause yeast infestation, dermatitis), freedom of movement and environmental sustainability.

Differences between reusable and disposable diapers:

Disposable diapers

Throwaway diapers are used by many young parents. I, too, always have a pack at home. Diapering is easy and uncomplicated, and the used diaper is disposed of hygienically in the residual waste. Disposable diapers are also much more comfortable when traveling. They are thin, but still hold the liquid.

However, there are really high piles of trash if you use this diaper around the clock. My first child didn’t tolerate the artificial surface very well anyway, and the added ingredients (e.g. kerosene) made me very uneasy. So I also tested the eco and cloth diapers.

The disposable diaper has an outer shell made of polyethylene and an absorbent core. This consists of a cellulose material, which is usually enriched with superabsorbent specific polymer salts. This binds the liquid. Components of the diaper may include petrolatum, sterile alcohol, thin kerosene and extracts of aloe barbadensisis.

Eco-diapers are made of environmentally friendly products and are environmentally friendly in their production. Nevertheless, they are also disposed of in the residual waste. So, in essence, the environmental friendliness refers to the production. Unlike non-organic diapers, these do not contain perfumes or natural latex. Thus, they have been dermatologically classified as skin-friendly and are very suitable for babies with skin problems on the bottom.

Cloth diapers

At first, cloth diapers take some practice! So do not be discouraged if not everything works out right away as it should! Here we are often talking about diaper systems. With the insert of diaper fleece, the contents can be removed ideally and hygienically. In addition, you can choose incredibly cute designs.

The cloth diaper and overpants are durable and easy to clean. Cotton muslin diapers have the advantage that they dry quickly, so bacteria can not spread and it does not start to smell so quickly. Gauze diapers can not only be put in the washing machine at high degrees, they can also be boiled without any problems, should your baby get a sore bottom because of bacteria or fungus.

The diaper always consists of an absorbent layer with wetness protection made of PUL, fleece or wool. There are 3 basic systems for reusable diapers:

All-in-one diapers have all three components sewn together. Pocket diapers have the absorbent pad in a kind of pocket and can be changed or topped up as desired. All-in-2 or hybrid diapers have the soaker in a flap of the overpants.

Today, the classic cloth diaper made of gauze or knit can be supplemented by modern pant diapers with various inserts made of microfiber, cotton, bamboo viscose or hemp. This allows for hygienic yet environmentally friendly diaper use.

All-in-ones have not convinced me personally. These have, by the not changeable inserts, quite a long dryness and also the models are usually not leak-proof. Overpants, on the other hand, can be equipped with small inserts and are directly usable from birth. Mostly they are size adjustable and last for several years. If you want to completely avoid waste production, thin gauze cloths can also be used as inserts.

My tip: To avoid large piles of garbage, protect the environment and your wallet, and still have some luxury on the go, I recommend a variation. At home and for short trips (e.g. shopping), my baby could wear cloth diapers or overpants with fleece and inserts without any problems. If we are on the road for longer, I reach for the disposable diaper in between. This can be changed and disposed of quickly and easily. Since my child was prone to inflammation and dry skin, I discovered the eco diaper. These do not contain perfumes or kerosenes and are much more environmentally friendly in production. For home, I only use cloth diapers with inserts or fleece.
