The 40 Best Children’s Books – Guidebook

There are a lot of authors who specialize in children’s books. The choice can sometimes be quite difficult. Which book is suitable for my child’s age group and how should a children’s book actually be structured?

These are questions you’ve probably already asked yourself when you’re standing in front of the bookshelf again

In our product recommendations, we have therefore compiled for you the most popular children’s books for children between 0 and 7 years of age. The checklist can also support you in your search. So you will always find the right book for every age.

Checklist For Children’s Books

Design And Structure
  • Target group: When choosing your children’s book, you should pay attention to the age group it is aimed at so that you do not under- or over-challenge your child. For example, there are children’s books (for 0-2 year old), picture books and read-aloud books (3-5 year old), and read-aloud and first reading books (6-7 year old)
  • Length: This should be up to 10,000 characters including spaces for younger children. Read-aloud books for older children are usually longer and can range from 30 to 80 standard pages in length
  • Language: For younger children, a simple structure is an advantage. Rhyme, repetition, or onomatopoeia are therefore particularly useful, as the child can easily understand them. For older children, the language may be more sophisticated, but should be adapted to the knowledge and skill level of the individual child
  • Complexity: The younger a child is, the less complex the plot and illustrations should be.
  • Elements that appeal to as many senses as possible (touch, hearing, sight…) are especially exciting for younger children.
  • First-time readers can already read longer texts and need fewer pictures. Nevertheless, short sentences and a simple sentence structure should prevail
Contents
  • Topics: You should orient yourself to the needs of the target group. Everyday experiences, animal stories, or family themes are particularly appealing to younger children. Older children can already identify with friendship or school stories. But fantasy creatures (talking animals, supernatural abilities, etc.) are also particularly exciting for children and encourage their own creativity and imagination
  • Narrative Structure: In picture books, the focus is usually on a central character who is accompanied in his or her life and experiences certain adventures. Children’s books often focus on groups of characters, for example the family or friends. A longer story also usually extends over several chapters.
  • Do not overload.Your chosen children’s book should be of an appropriate length and not too exciting, otherwise your child may be disturbed in his or her sleep phase.
  • Stories from everyday life are particularly suitable; children can recognize these situations and relate them to their own lives. This results in a learning character.

We have compiled recommended books for children up to 7 years.

FAQ For Children’s Books

What is a children’s book?

A children’s book is specially designed for children. It must therefore be clearly distinguished from books for young people and adults. For this reason, the language, images, narrative structure, font and font size must be adapted to the respective target group. Children should also be able to identify thematically with the children’s book

What should be considered when choosing a children’s book?

When choosing a children’s book, it is important to consider the age of the child. 2-year-olds are usually not yet able to understand complex content. Books with lots of pictures are ideal for this. 6-year-olds, on the other hand, can already deal with more difficult storylines, but should not be overburdened by the length of the book, either, so as not to lose the fun of reading together.

Why are children’s books important?

Children’s books can not only promote reading skills and understanding of more complex storylines, but they also have other educational values. For example, they can develop children’s motor skills as well as knowledge through elements of listening and touch. Fears or problems can also be better named and processed through stories that are close to everyday life

When are children’s books suitable?

Experts recommend children’s books from the age of 3 months. Many parents start reading to their children at this stage. Not only does the bond grow, but the child often associates (pre-)reading with more positive feelings. Sometimes the start of independent reading is then less difficult later on. Babies can also benefit from books that appeal to several senses. In this way, the senses and motor skills are promoted in a playful way

Which children’s books and authors are particularly suitable for reading aloud?

Well-known and popular authors among children include Astrid Lindgren, Erich Kästner and Michael Ende. Pixie books are also very popular with younger children, as they contain many pictures, allowing children to actively participate in the reading process, even if they are not yet able to classify letters or words themselves

How should a children’s book be structured?

Here, too, the age of the child plays a key role. Babies and toddlers cannot yet grasp complex structures, pictures and colors. It is therefore advisable for parents to choose shorter books so that they have enough time to look at the pictures. For school children, on the other hand, the text should be longer. The plot must also have a certain tension right from the start so that the child’s attention is not lost too quickly

How is a children’s book written?

In the beginning, there is the author’s idea. In order to be able to realize this idea, the author contacts a publisher, who first checks the author’s concept. Not every potential book is published, which is why editors have to differentiate carefully before deciding on a script. The unfinished book is then further elaborated, illustrations are added, and then proofread. Finally, the book can be printed and delivered to several bookstores

Who wrote the children’s book Peter Pan?

The popular children’s classic Peter pan was written by James Matthew Barrie. It is about three siblings whom Peter Pan visits at night. He takes them to Neverland, where the three children can live out their fantasy freely. One of the children is kidnapped by a pirate. It is a story of how Peter Pan free the child

How many words does a children’s book have?

Children’s books should not be too long to keep the child’s concentration. 30- 80 pages is quite appropriate for older children. However, you must decide individually what length suits your child’s level of knowledge

What typeface is appropriate for a children’s book?

The font must be easy to read so that your child is not overwhelmed by a multitude of letters. For this reason, it should not be squiggly or illegible
