- Contourgauges are available in different widths. The smallest ones have a width of about 130 to 150 mm. However, this size is only sufficient for very few applications. For example, to transfer the narrow side of a door frame. Contour gauges with a width of 25 to 30 cm are better.

For small contour gauges with a width of 150 to 200 mm, you can usually only measure contours up to 30 mm deep. However, this depth is not sufficient for many applications.
- Larger contour gauges with a width of 25 or 30 cm, which allow a maximum measuring depth of at least 50 to 60 mm, are better. This measuring depth is sufficient, for example, to transfer the contours of door frames or columns to floor coverings.
- A contour gauge should have a locking device for the pins . This ensures that the pins do not slip when transferring the contour to a laminate panel, for example, and the transfer thus becomes inaccurate.
- Various contour gauges are equipped with accessories. For example, a spirit level or an angle measuring ruler. However, these accessories are usually not much more than a makeshift. Separate angle measuring rulers and spirit levels are better and more accurate.
