Checklist For Twist Drills

Types
  • Twist drills are divided into three types. In Germany, the DIN 338 standard (formerly DIN 1414-1/2) specifies what these types must be.
  • Type N stands for the so-called normal spiral . It is suitable for normal materials such as steel.
  • Type H designates a long spiral. You can use this type for hard, tough and brittle materials, for example for high-strength steel, magnesium, rocks and plastics.
  • Type W denotes a narrow spiral. It is suitable for soft and tough materials such as copper, zinc and aluminum.
Material
  • Twist drills are made of hardened high speed steel (HSS), known in English as High Speed Steel. They are sufficient for most drilling work in the household.
  • If you want to drill into particularly hard materials such as alloy steel or stainless steel, use a twist drill with cobalt alloy.
  • Drill bits coated with titanium nitrideare also suitable for hard materials. You can recognize them by their golden color.
Bevel shape
  • Twist drills are available in different grinding forms.
  • The standard is the cone shell grinding. Twist drills with a conical surface grind are insensitive to high mechanical loads, but the centering is comparatively poor.
  • The taper-jacket grinding with sharpened cross cutting edge and corrected main cutting edge is suitable for tough and high-strength materials.
  • In cross grinding, the tip is cross-shaped. Forged workpieces can be machined with this type of grinding.
  • A twist drill with a center point is used for soft materials and thin workpieces.
  • For work with gray cast iron there is a special grinding form.
Size and compatibility
  • Twist drills are usually available as sets with drill diameters between 1 mm and 13 mm.
  • Most sets are compatible with all common hand drills and drill shank stands with round shank drill holders. Before buying, however, pay close attention to the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure that the drill bits fit your drill.

A twist drill is a drill that usually consists of two cutting edges and a tapered head. The head is sharpened to make pinpoint holes

What are the advantages of the twist drill?

A twist drill maintains a constant diameter even when re-sharpened. Furthermore, pointed drills have a favorable drilling angle, which is advantageous for further processing of the workpieces.

Twist drills for what?

Twist drills are often used to drill holes for screws or other elongated fasteners. In addition to metal, wood panels are also frequently drilled with a twist drill.

What are the advantages of coated twist drills?

Coated twist drills basically have a much longer life than uncoated twist drills because they are much more resistant to corrosion. For this reason, a coated twist drill is more expensive than an uncoated twist drill.

Why are large twist drills sharpened?

Twist drills are sharpened to reduce the feed force and improve chip flow.

What is the purpose of the flute in twist drills?
