Steerable bobsleds are a great upgrade to the classic sled for kids. Not only are kids more athletic, they can also influence which direction they go – which increases safety and fun.
We have summarized all the important information about steerable bobs for kids in a checklist . You can find a great selection of different bobsleds in our product recommendations.
- The classic steering bob is made entirely of plastic . The basic shape is a plastic tub with molded seat and hollows for the feet. These bobs are steered with a handy steering wheel. These steering bobs are suitable for children from about 3 years.
- Steering bobs in the shape of a snowmobile are only suitable for children from about 6 years of age. They have a tubular steel frame with a steering skid at the front and two widely spaced skids at the rear, to which the seat is connected. Depending on the model and manufacturer, these steering bobs are steered with a handlebar like a bicycle or a steering wheel.
- A bobsled with its own steering is only suitable from the age of 3, as smaller children cannot yet coordinate it, unlike a bobsled without steering. At this age, children should still be under supervision.
- From the age of 12, children can drive a steerable bob on their own.
- It is important that the steering linkage has as little play as possible up to the runner so that the bob can be steered precisely. The steering parts should be sufficiently stable so that they can withstand impacts without any problems.
- A plastic steering bobsled weighs about 3 to 5 kg, depending on its size. Steering bobs with a tubular steel frame can weigh 7 to 10 kg and are correspondingly difficult to pull up the slope.
- The smallest ones have a length of about 70 cm and can comfortably seat one child. Larger steering bobs are up to 110/120 cm long. They have a longer bench seat that can accommodate two children or one adult and one child
- If an adult and a child are to ride the steerable bob, then the load capacity must be at least 100 better 120 kg. For small children alone, a load capacity of up to 60 kg is usually sufficient.
- Steerable bobs are braked with steel claws operated by a long lever. Optimally, a steerable bobsled is equipped with two of these claws to achieve sufficient braking effect.
- Each steerable bobsled should be equipped with a pull rope by which the bobsled can be pulled back up the hill to the starting point relatively comfortably after the descent. The pull rope should be as tear-resistant as possible and made of nylon.

FAQ about the Lenkbob
A bobsled can already be used by small children. However, they should not ride a bobsled alone. Either this is done in the company of an adult or the little ones can be pulled on straight stretches. In addition, many children’s bobsleds have a safety belt.
The cheap models cost between 20 and 40 €. The larger and more resilient the bobsleds become, the more expensive they become. Sturdy models for 2 people quickly cost over 100 €
