Belt grinders literally put the finishing touches on workpieces and thus ultimately help determine the quality of the workpiece. It is, therefore, all the more important that you choose the right belt sander for your goals. When making your selection, you should keep the power, the belt dimensions, and the weight in mind.
We make the search easier for you! Just take a look at our checklist, where you will find the most important selection criteria at a glance. In our product recommendation, you will also find many interesting belt grinders, which we have compiled from the best belt grinders on the market.
- The power specified in watts allows you to draw conclusions about the performance, but actually only tells you how much electricity the belt sander consumes in an hour. We therefore recommend that you take a look at the belt speed. Especially with less high-quality devices, a lot of energy can be lost through heat. The wattage ranges from about 700 to over 1000 watts, the belt sanding speed between about, 120 to 440 m/min. It is not always the high wattage units that come up with fast belt sanding speeds here. A high belt sanding speed allows you to achieve a high stock removal rate during sanding. However, you should keep in mind that high removal rates are not recommended for all types of work. Therefore, you should choose a device with adjustable speed.
- The larger the dimensions of the abrasive belt, the larger the area you can work on. If you want to do smaller jobs, such as in model making, a large working surface would be more of a hindrance. So it very much depends on what work you want to use the belt sander for. Most belt grinders have a belt dimension of approx. 100 x 610 mm or 75 x 533 mm. You should also pay attention to the respective size when buying additional sanding belts.
- The weight of the different models can vary greatly. From lightweight with just about 2.5 kg to devices with over 6 kg, everything is possible. The heavier the belt sander, the more muscle power it requires from you. We recommend a model with a somewhat lower weight. 2.5 to 3.5 kg can be handled very well.
- A sanding frame can save you from ugly scratches and grooves in your workpiece, as the belt sander can only be placed straight on and will not tilt. Belt sanders with an exhaust system are now standard. However, make sure that the device really has a collection container for dust.
