After cold winter days, a wood-burning fireplace is responsible not only for warming up but also for creating a cozy atmosphere. To start a nice, long-lasting fire, the right firewood is needed. After comparing different fire woods, we have made a selection that is most suitable for you.
Everything you need to know about firewood, we have summarized in our checklist for you. You can find a selection of great firewoods in our product recommendations.
- A distinction is made between hardwood (e.g. ash, birch, chestnut, oak or copper beech) and softwood (e.g. spruce, larch, fir and pine).
- Regardless of the type of wood, attention should be paid to the water content of firewood. The drier the wood, the better it burns. According to the Federal Immission Control Act, wood with a water content of more than 25% may not be burned.
- Logs cut by themeter must be sawn to the desired size by the customer. This variant is more labor-intensive, but cheaper (about 40 € per cubic meter).
- With stove-ready wood you save the sawing, but this wood is more expensive (about 60 € per cubic meter).
- Prices vary depending on the type of wood, the region and the size of the wood chips.
- Fresh wood is much cheaper, but you sometimes have to store it for up to 3 years before you can use it. A dry storage area is needed.
- A mixture of hardwood and softwood makes sense.
- Softwood promotes the flames and is needed for the initial firing of the fireplace.
- The wood must be as dry as possible (water content less than 25%), free of fungus and mildew
- Tip: use a moisture meter.

The cost of firewood depends on the type of wood as well as the size. Meter goods and fresh wood are significantly cheaper, but are associated with more effort: Fresh wood must sometimes be stored for several years, and yard goods must be brought into the right size and shape. In our guide we have listed the best firewood. There you will also find different types and package sizes.
How long firewood has to dry depends on the water content and the environmental conditions. So it can be that wood is already sufficiently dry after a few months or you have to wait several years
A cubic meter of wood costs between 30 and 80 €, depending on the type of wood, the region and the size of the wood chips.
Hardwood such as oak or beech has a high density and therefore burns very long and evenly. However, it is quite difficult to ignite hardwood. Softwood is easier to ignite, but does not burn as long.
