Being a mom is a full-time job in and of itself and throwing in a business is no easy charge. While it may seem daunting to be a work at home mom, and stay productive with little ones to care for, it is possible. There wouldn’t be as many work from home jobs for moms than there are if it were not possible and I’m here to tell you that YOU can make it work, here’s how:
Identify your goals
When starting my work at home mom journey, the first thing that I needed to do was figure out what my goals were and how to get focused on those goals so that I could achieve them. I needed to consistently remind myself of my WHY. It is important to identify where you are and where you want to go.
If you’re having a hard time with this, a great resource is, “Your 20/20 Vision Plan: Getting Clear and Focused on What You Want, so You Can Acheive It” by Stacey Stratton. This is a detailed and comprehensive online program that helps you make a plan to gain clarity, stay focused, and create a life you love.
Once you know what you want and create your goals, it’s time to follow through.
Get organized
Organization has honestly not always come easily to me, but it is necessary in order to have a successful business. Organization is also very helpful for maintaining a healthy work/life balance.
How do I get organized? There are so many tools out there to help with organizational strategies but it can take some trial and error. If you have not yet started your business, DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP. Getting organized from the beginning will save you loads of time and money in the long-run.
Considering how much time work from home moms spend online, I have found a great tool to help me organize my own online world. “Organize Your Online World: An Easy Method To Organize Your Email, Apps and Phone To Get Things Done & Prevent Mindless Scrolling” by Rachel Norman. This video and photo-driven guide will help you to organize your email flow, apps, phone, and help you set (and keep) boundaries around screens.
A huge downfall for me since working from home has been how easy it can be to fall into the never-ending social media rabbit hole. This guide has tremendously helped me in limiting my online distractions while working online.
Manage your time
I am always trying to figure out how to improve time management. The fact is that mom life keeps me busy enough, so managing my time wisely is a must.
If you would like to learn to manage your time like a boss, I recommend, “Productivity Powerhouse” by Sagan Morrow. This content-packed eCourse is your roadmap to reducing overwhelm and improving focus, enabling you to do more in less time by maximizing your time and energy!
Create a schedule that works for you and your family
Your work at home mom schedule does not have to be the same as mine. The schedule that you create should be designed to best meet the needs of your family and yourself. This may not seem easy at first, but sticking to a schedule will make your entire family’s life easier.
The best part is that children already crave having a consistent schedule. If you already have a schedule for your children, you can figure out how to fit in your business priorities around your children’s schedule.
If you’re having a hard time sticking to your schedule, or figuring out how to create a schedule that fits with your already busy life. I encourage you to check out, “Time Management Mindset Shift” by Laura Shaw. This eCourse will help you learn how to shift your mindset so you can manage your time well in a way that’s realistic for your busy life.
“It takes a village”
I heard that phrase a lot before becoming a mom and it didn’t take long for me to realize how true this is. If you need help, ASK FOR IT. Those that may have told you, “Let me know if you ever need a babysitter” most likely did mean it. You do not need to feel bad about needing someone else to watch your kids while you get some work done so that you can stay focused. It is hard to stay productive when there are children around because children require a lot of attention.
Give yourself grace. Motherhood is hard. Owning a business is hard. It is absolutely possible to stay productive as a work at home mom BUT it doesn’t happen overnight…at least for most of us. If your current plan isn’t working, try a new one. Staying productive will always be a work in progress, but if you want it bad enough, you can accomplish amazing things!
