Everything About Artificial Insemination: Methods, Chances, And Risks

Methods Of Artificial Insemination

There are various methods of artificial insemination.
Which method makes the most sense depends on the individual situation.
In artificial insemination, the woman’s egg is fertilized with her partner’s sperm or foreign sperm.
The two most common procedures are insemination and in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, there are also other variants.

Insemination

In insemination, the doctor inserts fertilizable sperm into the woman’s uterus.
In this way, the sperm should reach the egg faster.
If no reason for childlessness is found, this method is often the first option.
Together with the woman, the doctor determines the time of ovulation.
The treatment is often accompanied by hormone therapy.
Ovulation is artificially induced by administering medication.

The chances of success depend on the age, the physical condition of the woman, as well as the number of sperm cells of the man that are incapable of fertilization.
If the man’s inability to conceive is too limited, the treatment will be ineffective. Then another method may be considered.
Pregnancy rate per attempt: about 15 to 20 percent.

In – Vitro – Fertilization

IVF is the abbreviation for in vitro fertilization. Fertilization takes place outside the body in a test tube. Here, the doctor brings sperm and egg together. Before IVF, hormone stimulation of the woman ensures that several eggs mature, increasing the chance of having a baby.
Pregnancy rate per attempt: 25 to 30 percent.

What Are Your Chances Of Success?

Compared to normal intercourse, their chances are quite high.
The reason for this is precise timing. In about half of all couples, artificial insemination results in a child. However, age, for example, affects the success rate.
For women under 40, the success rate is over 37 percent.
For younger women, it is already over 40 percent per treatment cycle.
Other factors, such as lifestyle habits or the number of previous treatments, can also have an influence.
However, you should be aware that successful fertilization does not always necessarily lead to pregnancy.
As with normal pregnancies, early miscarriages can occur.

Can I Positively Influence The Treatment?

The patient cannot do much more than not smoking, eating a healthy diet, getting enough exercise and watching her weight.
Patience and avoidance of stress is required.

What Are The Risks?

The greatest risk of artificial insemination, is a multiple pregnancy.
Since multiple embryos are used in IVF, the likelihood of having multiple children also increases.
However, in Germany, only a maximum of three embryos may be transferred into the womb. Statistically, about 20 percent of all women who have undergone IVF treatment have twins. Furthermore, treatment with hormones can lead to overstimulation, which can manifest itself in nausea, or shortness of breath, for example.

What Does Artificial Insemination Cost?

With hormone treatment, insemination costs about 800 euros, without about 350.
IVF treatment is considerably more expensive at 3000 Euros per attempt.
Since the probability of pregnancy in IVF is only about 30 percent per cycle, three to four cycles are often necessary. Thus, the total cost of an in vitro fertilization can quickly amount to 9,000 euros.

How Much Does The Health Insurance Cover?

The health insurance covers all diagnostic measures to determine the reasons for infertility. Hormone treatments are also covered in full. However, there are prerequisites that must be met for artificial insemination.

If the couple is married, both must be at least 25 years old, but the woman must not be over 40 and the man must not be over 50. As a rule, half the cost of eight inseminations without hormones, three treatments with hormones, or three IVF treatments is paid.
