No matter whether you are working from a home office, a living room office combo, your bed, or the closet you just converted into an office because you saw it on Pinterest and it looked like a good idea… you need supplies to make your day run smoothly.
Trust me on this one.
Work from home setup: small space edition
If you do you work from the dining room table where everyone eats dinner in the evening, or if you are like me and you set up shop on the living room floor at the coffee table on the daily…
I highly recommend making yourself an “office in a bin”.
There are certain work from home essentials you need to have a smooth successful day.

What’s in my “office in a bin” you ask? All of the things I need for my day to day.
Things you need for your Desk Setup:
- A place to sit: this can be a chair, a couch, a floor chair (if you don’t know, you should know.. I am OBSESSED).
- A computer or laptop: this is a given, I like to use a laptop because I move around my one-bedroom apartment based on my day’s needs. I love the idea of having a laptop stand/ monitor setup… it is in the works! Do you have something like this?
- Charging station: honestly, this is as simple as a power strip… I love having a phone charger designated for this station so I do not have to rummage around the home during the day.
- Desk: a desk is a loose term, you need some sort of table to place your laptop on… this could be your dining room table, a tray table, a lap desk table, or a coffee table.
- Lamp: lighting is KEY for virtual meetings and for your eyeballs, I love to use my ring light for my virtual meetings… it flips the professional switch in my head.
- Decor: if your designated work space is travelling, pick out a coffee mug that makes you smile, make it a pen cup, and keep it tucked in your office bin. This way, you can take it out and put it right on your workspace for the day to make you feel as official as you are.
Sometimes our brains need us to set the scene for productivity, also there are never too many pens around in my opinion.
I love to write in my planner, my notebook, and on all of the sticky notes. (add those things to your OFFICE IN A BIN as well ).
Speaker: In my opinion, I work slower and am more distracted if I am working in silence. Maybe it is from years of the hustle and bustle of the office noise… or wearing the silencing headphones during those years, BUT some nice tunes in the background really get my gears grinding.
So, take a minute and think about how you feel once you sit down to your work from home office space. What needs to change?
Creating a work from home setup for you to have a smooth day will boost your productivity and lower your stress levels.
There is nothing worse than searching for a pen all of the time.
Let’s talk about your work from home setup
Do you have a designated workspace?
Work from home setups look different for everyone, but I do find a lot of value in creating a dedicated workspace.
“A dedicated workspace looks different for everyone depending on the size and layout of your space” – Refinery29
What does your work from home setup look like?
We live in a one bedroom apartment, so I am definitely in the group of people who don’t have a home office, but I do have (several) home office spaces.
I do all of my virtual meetings from our dining room table. I also set up shop on the floor at the coffee table when I am blogging all day.
I know I am not the only one here who doesn’t have a spare room, or closet… (have you seen this closet into office trend?
I am OBSESSED but we have ONE closet in this whole space so… it needs to remain a closet).
Don’t stress, I got you.
We are going to go through the ways you can improve your office set up at home… No matter where in your home you are working.
I pack up my laptop and “my office” in my laptop bag and a bin every evening so we can eat dinner at the table and in the morning, I set up my pen cup and my laptop.
Setting the scene really helps me get in the work time mindset… packing it up at the end of the day also helps my brain turn off work mode.
Work from home setup in bedroom
Do you have an office set up in your bedroom?
Or are you working from under the blankets in your bed?
Both are totally fine!
Personally, I find that I am not as productive sitting in my bed than I am sitting at a table. But I totally get it, you are short on SPACE.
If you are set up in your bedroom, are you in your bed working or do you have some kind of desk situation?
If I could make a recommendation it would be to set up a folding table and chair for your work, I know it’s nice to work from bed, but personally I find it to be more difficult to separate my work life from my personal life when I put myself in a situation like this.
Before my “office in a bin” I was feeling very burnout by Thursday afternoon because it felt like I was working every hour of the day.
I highly suggest putting your phone away 2 hours before bedtime so you can unwind and practice some self care before tomorrow (if you can).
Working from home at the dining room table
If you set up camp at the table every morning and then push all of your office things to the side while you eat dinner… I see you. I am you.
My recommendation to improve this kind of work from home setup is getting a designated “OFFICE IN A BIN”, buy a bin or a crate so at the end of the day you can place all of your office things in it until morning… such an easy life hack that will change your work life.
There is something so powerful in setting up and transforming your workspace to your place for relaxation. A small switch, like packing everything up in your laptop bag even if you aren’t travelling or putting all of your things in a bin will signal in your brain that the work day is over and it is time for dinner and family.
Creating and following routine is a powerful practice and I cannot recommend this enough.
Working from your home office
Does your home office look the way you want it to?
Do you have some decor that brings you joy?
I highly recommend settling in to your home office and making it your own. Make sure you have an extra phone charger for your desk, invest in a good chair, do the thing you need to do that makes your day run more smoothly.
A home office should be a space that feeds your creativity and calms your soul. It is different for everyone.
My dream home office has large spider plants hanging and family photos on the walls. I always had family photos on my corporate office desks, it always made me smile and helped keep me motivated to remember WHO and WHAT I am working for.
Small changes can make a big difference in your mood which will shape your whole day!
How to improve your work from home setup
Improving your work from home setup starts with your home office inspiration. Go on Pinterest and let yourself dream and feel inspired.
Figure out the elements you need to be productive, calm, and successful.
As I mentioned early, an office in a bin is an easy fix if you are feeling overwhelmed and unorganized working from home in a small apartment or space or sometimes we need a new plant or candle to center us while we are working from our desks day in and day out.
Start small when changing and improving your work from home setup, but by designating a workspace for yourself in your home you will begin to feel more organized throughout the day.
Good luck mama,
You got this!
