Mason’s hammers are made to cut bricks into the right shape and appropriate size. But not all mason hammers are the same. We show you what’s important when buying one.
In our checklist you get a lot of information that is helpful for the purchase decision and in our product recommendations you will certainly find the right mason’s hammer.
- The handle of a mason’s hammer is usually made of ash wood or steel.
- A model with a steel handle is recommended here. Unlike wood, steel is resistant to weathering and, in addition, is also much more robust.
- The only disadvantage is the slightly higher weight. The handle should also have a good grip and a damping effect.
- A handle made of multi-porous plastic is recommended here, which can absorb the recoil of the hammer.
- Here, a distinction is made between two different head shapes. The so-called Rhenish and the Berlin head shape.
- Which model is more suitable depends on personal requirements. With a Rhenish mason’s head, you get a mason’s hammer with an agile short head and a groove for removing nails.
- The head of the Berlin variant also offers you a flattened and wider fin.
- The longer the mason’s hammer is overall, the higher the power effect.
- For solid material, such as larger blocks, you should therefore use a slightly longer mason’s hammer. Experts recommend a minimum length of approx. 35 cm here.
- For smaller projects, a slightly shorter model will suffice. However, the hammer should not be too short. You never know what tasks will come your way, so a mason’s hammer with a length of approx. 30 cm is ideal.
- A heavy hammer has more momentum, but it can also tire you out much faster. After all, there’s a difference between repeatedly swinging a hammer that weighs a pound and one that weighs more than a pound.
- Again, the requirements depend on the task at hand. To work on solid aerated concrete , a heavy mason’s hammer is advantageous. For plaster, a hammer weighing about 500 g is sufficient.
- To ensure that your new mason’s hammer does not lose any of its functionality even after prolonged use, it should be of solid workmanship.
- Very good mason’s hammers, for example, are forged from one piece.
