The different versions
  • The simplest version is the so-called lie pin, which looks very similar to a normal screwdriver. Unfortunately, it is not always 100% reliable. Even if the control light does not light up, this does not guarantee that the phase is really voltage-free. For complicated work, the lie pen is not necessarily suitable. For connecting a lamp , however, it is usually quite sufficient.
  • Much more reliable are two-pole voltage testers. Some models are also suitable for checking RCD circuits.
  • The third variant is a contactless voltage tester, but it is only suitable for alternating current . With it, you only need to approach the power source. The probe detects whether the test area is voltage-free or voltage-carrying.
  • By the way: Single-pole voltage testers must be tested according to DIN VDE 0680-6 and double-pole voltage testers according to DIN VDE 0682-401.
The measuring range
  • The range can be between a voltage of 0.3 – 1,200 V. Simple voltage testers are only suitable for a measuring range of approx. 150 – 250 V . With a two-pole voltage tester, you can also check your car battery effortlessly. Even standard models cover a measuring range of approx. 6 – 700 V . Better devices reach over 1000 V and can determine safe values even with heavy current and FI – circuits. Digital technology shows the exact values on a display or on a scale.
  • Maximum values should be indicated on the product itself and must be considered urgently.
The display of exact values
  • Devices that have a modern LCD can provide you with similar functions as a Multimeter offer. Other devices only have a simple LED display.
  • Contactless voltage testers give optical or acoustic signals, depending on the model. Screwdrivers with integrated voltage testers only have a thin filament.
The weight
  • Voltage testers weigh between just 10 g up to 500 g. However, you should pay less attention to the weight than to the functions offered. A simple lie tester may be light as a feather, but it limits your options considerably.
  • A two-pole phase tester is unfortunately somewhat heavier. Therefore, it should have a compact and handy shape.
